16th Geology Conference

Gerace Research Centre front enterance.

When: June 14-18 2012

Where: Gerace Research Centre, located on San Salvador Island, one of the outermost of a chain of some 700 islands that comprise The Bahamas

Description: The first geological conference held on San Salvador was in 1982. Since then, there has been a geology conference hosted every other year at the Gerace Research Center, a total of 15 conferences as of 2011. Originally focusing on the geology of the Bahamas and Caribbean area, the scope has expanded to include other carbonate regions.

The 16th Symposium will focus upon the influence of global change on carbonate depositional settings. How have alterations in precipitation, storm influences, and sea level affected the distribution and character of carbonate deposition and erosion in past history? And what effects have these historic changes had on the distribution of ecosystems? Finally how can this history be used to anticipate future climatic change effects as global society negotiates such drastic changes? The meeting organizers have assembled a collection of guest speakers and discussants to facilitate our thinking and to help develop a research agenda for the future. The conference will conclude with a summary recommendation for those needed efforts that will be shared with the National Science Foundation.

As in past years, the Symposium welcomes oral and poster presentations from professional scientists, managers, and students, and concerning all aspects of Bahamian and carbonate regional geology. The program will be arranged around a series of topics with each unit concluding with an integrative discussion. The technical program will be interspersed with short field excursions around the island.

Pre-meeting Field Trip: The pre-meeting fieldtrip will be exploring New Providence. Several stops are planned. Lunch and transportation will be provided. The trip will occur on June 14th. A charter flight from New Providence to San Salvador will be available.
